Chapter 13

The next day, instead of heading to the club to start vendor interviews, Kai and I surprise Nev by heading to the country a day early. She’s due to be there tomorrow to ride Beauty, but with today marking a week since Declan left, we thought she’d appreciate the distraction.

We leave early and make it to the country while the morning sun is still warming the ground, and no sooner have I put the car in park, has Nev jumped out, and making a beeline for the stables. Kai and I follow, and by the time we stroll into the stable, she’s already got Beauty out of the stall, and getting her reading for their ride.

She takes her time, brushing the horse’s coat in long, smooth strokes, talking to her as if they’re in their own little world. And surprisingly, Beauty seems to understand, looking back every so often, which Nev greets with a carrot and a kiss on her forehead.

Seeing Nev smile is worth driving in a shit ton of traffic and I make a mental note to talk with Declan about scooping up the house behind us the next time we talk. If we bought it, we could knock it down and extend the space we already have and create a nice size pasture. It wouldn’t be like the country, of course, but Nev could see her horse every day, and honestly, all three of us would do anything to make her happy.

Kai and I lean against the wall of the stable, watching as she hoists herself up on the horse’s back and rides off, tapping her cell phone and promising to call if she runs into any trouble. We know she’ll be fine. The legion is everywhere, and Declan has people watching her now, too. He told me when we talked last night after he’d calmed down about the tests James ran on the samples from the table in the chamber room back at Locksley.

Nev was right. He was pissed. But I did as she asked, and kept him calm, and told him it was under control. But honestly, it wasn’t and wouldn’t be until The Augury was gone and Nev was no longer in their cross hairs. I’m on edge. Kai, too. But no matter how tense we are, being in the country offers a respite. The four of us spent a lot of time here growing up, and memories are everywhere I look, putting us at ease.

When Nev returns from her ride and suggests we pick up groceries and have a leisurely dinner, I agree without hesitation. I’m not anxious to get back to the city just yet, and I can see that neither she nor Kai are, either. It’s a great night and we laugh until we cry, and when Nev falls asleep on the couch while we’re watching a movie—her head on my lap, and legs on Kai’s—we cover her with a blanket, grab one for ourselves, and call it a night.
